More than a year after the military seized control of the democratically elected government of Myanmar, the people, including the trade union movement, continue to mobilize in support of democracy. The IUF continues its call for a return to democracy in Myanmar and for targeted sanctions against all companies involved with military businesses or the military cronies, including calls on Hilton Worldwide and Accor to immediately cease their business relationships with agents of the Tatmadaw, Myanmar’s military dictatorship. The IUF stands with its sister global unions in calling for recognition of the National Unity Government (NUG) at the United Nations.
- Hilton Worldwide continues to operate the Hilton Ngapali Resort & Spa, in partnership with Eden Hotels & Resorts Company Limited, listed in the report to the UN Human Rights Council by the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar
- Groupe Accor SA continues its operations of The Lake Garden Nay Pyi Taw–MGallery by Sofitel and the Novotel Yangon Max, in partnership with the Max Myanmar group, whose owner, Mr. Zaw Zaw, is a known military crony with very close ties to senior military generals
- According to AAPP, 11,776 citizens have been arrested, charged or sentenced, and 1,494 have been killed, many of whom were tortured to death
IUF General Secretary Sue Longley stated, “It is unconscionable that companies like Hilton and Accor continue to fuel a regime of death and oppression. More than a year after the coup d’état, it is time for companies to stop funding the military regime and to support the will of the people for an immediate return to democracy.”
