New SEWA publication highlights women workers organizing
India’s IUF-affiliated Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) has launched a new publication to highlight the successes and the ongoing challenges for women workers organizing in India’s informal economy. The first issue of SEWA Rashtriya Patrika takes the reader inside the long campaign to win identity cards for informal workers in the state of Gujarat confirming their identity as workers and providing access to social security and protection “After years of working anonymously rolling incense sticks, picking waste, vending vegetables and doing mason work on construction sites.” Following their legal victory, SEWA members had to rescue the thousands of filled-out application forms from the file storeroom of the state Labour Commissioner to finally receive their cards!
A second article describes recent organizing by women fish workers in the fishing communities of Kerala which links the right to livelihood with the struggle for sustainable fishing.
