On December 22, workers in the Italian hospitality sector struck for the renewal of the national sectoral collective agreement. IUF affiliates Filcams Cgil, Fisascat Cisl and Uiltucs Uil report very high participation levels across hotels, fast-food and catering. Over 20,000 workers marched in Milan, Naples and Rome with a demand to the employers’ associations for good faith negotiations.
Other demands are:
- Wage increases in line with inflation and increased profits in recent years
- Legislative provisions on parental leave, equal opportunity and combating gender-based violence
- An end to precarious working arrangements, including conversion of fixed-term contracts into permanent contracts and ending involuntary part-time work by increasing hours
Filcams Cgil General Secretary, Fabrizio Russo, remarked that ”We are called to mobilization, to strike, for those workers in essential and strategic sectors of the entire national economy who have been denied the renewal of their national collective agreement and decent wage increases for years. We want to change this present because we are, all of us, for democracy and humanity. We have never given up and we will never give up, because we are certain that we can fight, that we must fight, that we can live differently, that together we can change our lives.”
