New Zealand union support for Maldives Hilton union struggle targets foreign ministry
New Zealand’s Service and Food Workers Union (SFWU) is targeting the Foreign Ministry in support of the struggle for reinstatement of 22 unfairly dismissed union workers at the Conrad Hilton Rangali Islands Resort in Maldives.
In a letter to the Foreign Ministry, SFWU National Secretary John Ryall highlights the role of Honorary Consul Ahmed Saleem, who is a Director of the company which owns the resort. “We urge you to inform Mr Saleem If he wants to continue as a New Zealand Government representative that he needs to ensure that the court ruling is immediately adhered to, that the Crown Company – appointed management recognise the Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM) union and that good faith negotiations commence to resolve the outstanding issue,” says the SFWU.
On January 4, TEAM held another sea-borne protest informing guests of the dispute for two hours before the action was halted by the police.
