London: hospitality workers protest against poverty
Published: 04/08/2014
The British Unite the Union will hold an action outside London’s City Hall next Friday August, 8, to protest against low pay within the hospitality industry. Although London is one of the most visited cities around the world and its hotels, bars and restaurants are highly profitable, these companies do not pay the living wage (£8.80 per hour or 14.80 USD) to workers. Room attendants are usually paid by the number of rooms they clean, restaurant waiters heavily rely on customer tips and bar staff are often on zero hour contracts (essentially contracts that guarantee neither work nor income).
“To hospitality workers across London we send our full support and solidarity. Your struggle in London is our struggle and hospitality workers everywhere stand with you shoulder to shoulder”, said IUF general secretary Ron Oswald.
