June 12: World Day Against Child Labour 2013 targets child domestic labour
The IUF today welcomed the launch of a campaign by the Global March Against Child Labour to eliminate child domestic labour and protect young domestic workers.
The Global March campaign is pushing for more ratifications of ILO Convention 189 on Domestic Workers and calling for “freedom and the opportunity to receive education and training for child domestic workers worldwide”. It will initially target Indonesia, Panama and Togo.
A new report from the ILO also launched to mark World Day Against Child Labour, estimates that 10.5 million children are “working as domestic workers in people’s homes, in hazardous and sometimes slavery-like conditions”.
