Spain: strike by poultry and rabbit processing workers brings employers back to the bargaining table

National strike action on April 11-12 by poultry and rabbit slaughtering and process workers in Spain has brought the employers back to the bargaining table. IUF affiliates CC.OO and UGT report that 90% of eligible workers joined the strike, called by the unions when negotiations deadlocked over employer demands for increased outsourcing and subcontracting, more flexible working hours, the elimination of seniority and the cancellation of two consecutive rest days. The unions now return to the bargaining table in a strong position to win improved employment security, protect work breaks and fight attacks on seniority.

The unions have expressed gratitude on behalf of their members “for the many gestures and examples of international trade union solidarity channeled through the IUF and its European regional organization EFFAT-IUF.”

The unions have not ruled out further strike action if progress is not made within a reasonable timeframe.
