The trial of Brother Lee Cheuk Yan, General Secretary of the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (HKCTU), and eight other democracy activists and human rights defenders began in Hong Kong last week, as Beijing rapidly dismantles the special status of Hong Kong with all forms of democratic governance and public accountability disappearing.

In May 2020, UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteurs  called on the Hong Kong government to drop the charges against democracy activists, rights defenders and trade unionists. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) issued a further call in January 2021 for the immediate release of activists arrested on January 6, including HKCTU chair, Carol Ng.
