Migrant workers in meatpacking gain U.S. citizenship with union assistance
In Marshalltown Iowa, workers in the meatpacking sector from Central America, Asia, and Africa have gained citizenship with the financial and practical assistance from their union, UFCW Local 1149.
With assistance of specialist staff from the UFCW International, the Local works with members to process their applications and also makes a substantial grant towards the cost of the application.
Out of a total membership of 2,700, the Local has 300 members in the citizenship programme
Local 1149 President Roger Kail (pictured) says he is committed to a programme which delivers so much to members and the wider community.
‘Migrant workers find a home for their families in the U.S. in the arms of their union.’
