The fight to reinstate the trade union leaders at the Sheraton Grand Conakry is gaining momentum locally, regionally and internationally with a number of important recent actions:

  • on November 12, IUF-affiliated FHTRC-ONSLG held a press conference in Conakry, Guinea to inform the Guinean public about the unfair dismissals of General Secretary Amadou Diallo and Deputy General Secretary Alhassane Diallo; click HERE to see more than 25 press stories including print, radio and television interviews
  • on November 19, RadioLabour in Canada ran interviews with the terminated union leaders in both English and French; click HERE for English and HERE for French
  • on November 30, the IUF launched an Urgent Action call on the World Bank Group’s International Finance Corporation and the Sheraton Grand Conakry management for reinstatement of the union leaders including a photo petition with over 150 workers from the hotel demanding reinstatement; the Urgent Action call quickly generated over 3500 responses
  • on December 2, IUF Africa hosted a Zoom Rally calling for the reinstatement of the Sheraton Grand Conakry union leaders featuring speakers from IUF affiliates across Africa in the hotel sector, the Guinean labor movement, the International Trade Union Confederation, the International Labour Organization, Global Labor Justice-International Labor Rights Forum, and Jobs with Justice
I’m pleased to report that after weeks of silence, the International Finance Corporation has requested a meeting with the IUF in the spirit of ‘constructive dialogue.’ However, we all know that dialogue is not reinstatement. The IUF will fight one day longer until Brothers Amadou and Alhassane are reinstated.
Sue Longley, IUF General Secretary
