Tourism workers in Tunisia win important pay rise
After several negotiating sessions starting in June 2016, IUF affiliate FGAT-UGTT and the Tunisian Hotel Federation have reached a framework agreement which provides workers in the sector with a 6% pay rise plus transport allowance and other benefits. The presence of the Ministers of Tourism and of Social Affairs during the negotiations testified to the importance of the sector for the entire economy.
Negotiations went on for over three months during which the employers continually refused to agree a wage increase which would allow workers to protect their purchasing power. The agreement was eventually reached on September 15th, only two days before the forty-eight-hour strike called by FGAT-UGTT to support the demands.
