Tunisia: general strike call revoked after government agrees to UGTT demands
Following a round of strikes and demonstrations by Tunisia’s national center UGTT and international condemnations of the violent attacks on trade unionists, the government entered into 2 days of intensive negotiations which produced an agreement meeting the union’s key demands. The UGTT therefore revoked the call for a national general strike on December 13.
The government has agreed to the establishment of a joint commission to investigate the violent attacks on the UGTT by pro-government militias, to respond appropriately to the commission’s recommendations and to investigate and prosecute individuals and organizations who took part in the December 4 violence.
