UILAPESCA leads debate on fish workers’ rights at the conference in memory of Gaetano Pensabene
Over one hundred people gathered in the City hall of Palermo, capital of Sicily, for a meeting to discuss the ways to improve protection of the workers in the fisheries sector on December 17, 2016. The debate has ranged from the specific Sicilian fishing problems to the issue of illegal fishing and the respect of labour rights of fishermen in the world. The conference was held in the memory of Gaetano Pensabene, regional secretary of UILA Sicily, who passed away in 2015.
UILAPESCA presented its new research on fighting illegal fishing and promoting decent work in the sector. The report highlights the evolution of the international fishery law in 2016 and focuses on the next tasks for the international campaign for stronger legal linkages between illegal fishing and human rights abuses.
