On January 26 Guest Editorialist, Yamina Meghraoui, President of the National Committee of Women Workers of IUF affiliate SNAPAP/CGATA, described the desperate situation of women trade unionists detained under false accusations in Algeria. SNAPAP/CGATA and our sister global union federation, Public Services International have launched a campaign demanding the unconditional release of Dalila Touat and Namia Abdelkader, both teachers and both prisoners of conscience.
*Dalila Touat was sentenced on January 3 to 18 months in prison for her opposition to the presidential election, including accusations of “publications undermining the public order.” Dalila has been on hunger strike since her sentencing, and her life is now in danger
*Namia Abdelkader has been incarcerated since December 2 for speaking out, confronting injustice and fighting the corrupt generals in power
