Another union activist has been murdered in the Philippines. Edilberto Miralles, a former taxi union president, was gunned down in a drive-by shooting on September 23 in front of the National Labor Relations Commission in Quezon City, where he was scheduled to attend a hearing. He is the seventh union and community activist to be murdered in September, following the September 17 assassination of Orlando Abangan.
In a statement mourning the loss of yet another labour rights defender, the IUF-affliated SENTRO federation condemned “the culture of violence spread by the current spate of summary executions in the name of the so-called war on drugs.”
