“Lampung Needs Sustainable Fisheries, Sustainable Jobs!”
On October 30th, Federasi Serikat Buruh Lampung (FSBL) led 130 women workers of Phillips Seafood wearing “Worker Safe” bandana to a protest rally to show their disappointment to one of the biggest seafood companies. Since April 2015, the company dismissed 205 workers. More than half of those who still work inside factory are casual workers, even if they have worked for more than 15 years.
Since the mass dismissal, Phillips Seafood built an illegal home-based industry called “mini plants” to get the maximum quality product for the minimum cost. The company can pay the workers in mini plants the lowest wages, do not take responsibility for their health and safety and even do not care how they dispose the waste.
With the slogan “Lampung Needs Sustainable Fisheries, Sustainable Jobs!” workers walked to protest in front of the Labour Department to demand the closure of mini plants, so the jobs can move back to work inside the factory and reinstatement of all the dismissed workers, converting their jobs into permanent.
