Spanish unions beat back employer demands for more ‘flexibility’ in new agreement for Balearic Islands hotels and restaurants
June 17, 2014
The IUF-affiliated Spanish unions FECOHT-CCOO and SMC-UGT have rebuffed employer demands for greater flexibility in working time and outsourcing in the new 4-year agreement for hotel and restaurant workers signed with the employers association in the Balearic Islands on June 12. This regional agreement traditionally sets the national standard for the sector.
The unions had threatened industrial action during the forthcoming high season in response to aggressive employer demands, and after several rounds of negotiation were able to improve limitations on outsourcing, maintain the “permanent seasonal” contract which prevails in the sector and win increased wages.
